For my first blog of 2012 I wanted to share with you all a personal project I have set myself for this year: “At Home with Jack”.

I am sure any parent can relate to the fact that our children seem to grow up so fast, it might seem like only yesterday that we were cradling our babies in our arms, but soon they are crawling about, babbling and before we know it running, jumping around and getting up to all sorts of mischief. My son Jack is now 2 and half years and means more to me than anything in the world. He is such a joy to be around, is full of character and has enriched my life More than Words, but he is changing so fast and it recently dawned on me that I really do not have any photographs of him just at home being Jack. I have taken lots on family photographs on days out and holidays but never really pick up the camera when we have our Mummy/Jack at home days doing all the things that Jack loves. He has already outgrown so many toys, books and t.v. programmes that he maybe once loved and I would hate to forget all of those little things that were all part of his childhood. I have therefore set myself a personal challenge to try and capture those simple day to day moments that seems to pass by so quickly.

So my project will be to take a least 1 photograph a week of Jack at Home doing his everyday things, totally natural and unposed. They might not necessarily be technically the most perfect images since they will be very much spur of the moment, but to me they will be precious and will provide everlasting memories of his childhood and hopefully capture his wonderful spirit.

I am also going to use this as an opportunity to have fun in Photoshop and try out some different editing techniques, which is not something I have had much time to dabble with until now. Since starting photography I have tried to focus on learning the craft and getting images technically correct in camera to minimise work in post production. I like my images especially wedding photos to look clean and crisp and true to the actual events. Having said this I do love Photoshop, it is a powerful tool and is a huge learning curve in itself and this will be a good opportunity for me to have some fun and play around with different editing styles and techniques. I especially love the ‘Vintage Look and Feel’ that is very fashionable right now and adds a bit of a twist to everyday images so this might be a style you see cropping up with this personal project.

I am not sure if I will manage weekly updates, but I certainly will try and post a minimum of once a month and if you are a parent why not get involved yourself and undertake a similar project, you don’t need a professional camera just keep yours eyes out for those everyday little things that our children do that make them who they are and capture their individual little personalities.

Well this was not just another wedding this was the wedding of HELEN AND PETE, our very good friends and snowboarding buddies.  We could not wait to capture their day for them and was looking forward to the challenge of meeting their style brief and trying out some new ideas. This wonderful fun-loving couple definitely do not do ordinary, they love vintage, love to be different and love quirky images that have a very relaxed and natural feel. Hopefully we did it! I was really pleased with the overall look  and feel of the images and this retro / vintage / quirky kinda style is definitely something I want to explore further.

The Wedding Day Preparation

Our day started at Helen’s home where bridal preparations were well underway. It was a lovely relaxed calm atmosphere.  The grooms dad (also a hairdresser) had set up ‘Pete’s Parlour’ in the dining room and was busy styling the hair of all of the lovely bridesmaids.

I fell in LOVE with Helen’s dress, a slim-fitting lace gown with a v-neck and beautiful detailing, it was the perfect look for her and the vintage style of the wedding.  The flowers arrived and everybody was blown away by them, again just what the couple wanted, rustic looking wild flowers as if they had just been freshly picked from a meadow.  Everything was coming together. It was soon time for us to make our way to the church to meet Pete the groom and his grooms party, the guys all looked great there was lots of friendly banter and jesting between truly great friends. We worked quickly to capture some contemporary images of all the guys to make sure there was time for lots of more natural and reportage shots, a style the couple adore the most.

The Wedding Ceremony

Our bride arrived in a pale Blue VW Camper and looked radiant & elegant as she was helped out by her proud father.  After a few quick pictures outside of the church our bride prepared for her grand entrance. It was an emotional walk up the aisle, but as soon as the couple saw each other they relaxed and there was smiles throughout the beautiful church service.  The vows were moving, hymns beautiful and Helen’s Nan gave a very touching reading.

The couple walked back down the aisle to the Beatles classic ‘All You Need Is Love‘ with beaming smiles across their faces, pausing quickly for a great shot in the church door-way.  They greeted all of their guests outside the church in an impromptu receiving line and then it was time to move to the front lawn for the formal group photographs.  Once everybody had started to make their way to the couple’s venue I stayed back with Helen and Pete at the Church to capture some romantic and quirky images of them both together.

The Wedding Reception

We were soon making our way to the The White Horse Pub where all of the couple’s guests had gathered to greet the happy couple.  As they arrived and entered the reception room their was an almighty cheer and applause, the atmosphere was just magical.  So much joy and happiness for this much-loved couple. As friends we were honoured to be part of the wedding guests and were able to sit with the couple and enjoy a scrumptious meal and cheeky glass of red wine.. MMMmm delicious! but of course I could not sit still for long and was soon off photographing all of the amazing unique (mostly hand-made) touches that the couple had put into their wedding day. Following the meal the guests were treated to the talent of Clare Blackman an AMAZING artist who captivated the crowd with her an acoustic set and beautiful voice.

Following dinner all the guests mingled and chatted in the courtyard as the sun set and there was time for me to capture some nice relaxed shots of everybody soaking up the atmosphere. I dragged our couple off for one last shot at the front of the house just before night set in.  I am glad we did this shot  - I love this one of them.

Before first dance the Father of the Bride gave a heartfelt, emotional speech which put lumps in the throat of all the guests and caused a few tears to be shed, it was clear that Helen was the apple of her fathers eye.  The best men followed up giving an off the cuff comical speech, which had everyone in hysterics and then the couple took to the dance floor for their First Dance – Pete Dorhety’s This is for Lovers.  Then the PARTY started and everybody was up on that dance floor doing their thing and rocking out to some classic tunes! At this point my mission was accomplished and I could also relax. I tucked into the delicious buffet and enjoyed catching up with friends.

Here’s wishing an amazing couple a lifetime of Love and laughter together, keep on rocking and being awesome and look forward to seeing you on the slopes sometime very soon..

Blake Hall is situated amid 20 acres of formal gardens and secluded woodland near the pretty town of Ongar, Blake Hall has been a home to the Capel Cure family for over 220 years. The historic setting of Blake Hal, its lovely gardens and its newly refurbished 17th century barns with modern facilities offers a perfect venue for a wedding.

The area outside the barns is an ideal setting for BBQ’s, reception drinks and to enjoy the romantic sunset. The seclusion and privacy of the Hall’s stunning rose gardens, formal lawns and ancient trees provide countless opportunities for wonderful photographs

Wedding Day Preparations

On Saturday 25th May I had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of Natalie and Robert at St Germain Church followed by their reception which was held at Blake Hall, Essex. The couples day was blessed with glorious weather and I was excited to see what images we would capture.

The day started early at the Bride’s home where preparations where well underway, the girls were sipping champagne whilst applying finishing touches to hair and make-up and they were all excited about the day ahead. Natalie was calm and relaxed and looked absolutely stunning. She had kept her dress secret from EVERYBODY and it was lovely to photograph Mum helping her daughter into her dress and capture the reaction of her bridesmaids as she stepped out for the big reveal.

After a handful of shots in the garden it was time for us to make the journey to the Church to meet Rob and his Groomsmen. They were already waiting for us when we arrived so we got on straight away with capturing some cool and contemporary images of all the guys before their guests started to arrive and it was time for Robert to take his place at the top the isle.

The Wedding Ceremony

Natalie’s arrival to the Church was elegant arriving in a chauffeur driven Jaguar with her father and walking down the isle on his arm.  The service was lovely, I am beginning to fall in love with church services, although the light can be challenging, after what can inevitably be a hectic morning of getting ready, there is always something quite calming about Church Ceremony’s and the images that we capture are timeless. The wooden pews, beautiful stained glass windows & oak beams,  the exchange of wedding rings vows and of course THE KISS always seems so enchanted – a lovely way to start married life.

After Natalie & Robs beautiful service it was time to head off to Blake Hall just a short journey down the country lane.  On arrival the couple where greeted  by the venue’s staff and the sounds of an incredible Jazz musician resounding through the courtyard. Whilst all the guests where making their way I took the couple for walk around the venue’s exquisite gardens for some lovely romantic shots together. We were spoilt for choice with such lovely features and not enough time to use them all, we also had to hide from the sun that was now blazing and sought shade amongst the trees and a tree swing capturing some lovely images of this beautiful young couple.  A key shot that stands out for me and i think is oneof my favourites is the romantic kiss i captured amongst the poppies in the the venues Gardens, there is somthing quite romantic, wild and free – perhaps a little raunchy? but a beautiful moment and I think a fantastic image.

The Wedding Reception

The guests were all enjoying themselves, sipping drinks, laughing and chatting to one-another in the courtyard which allowed for me to capture some nice relaxed, natural reportage shots of everybody soaking up the day… and the sun!

After greeting their guests in the grounds of the venue and a formal receiving line our couple were announced in as the new Mr & Mrs Mulcrone and took their seats for their wedding breakfast.   I took a short break before capturing their great speeches, cutting of the cake and time for one last formal shot of our couple and my favourite of the day of a sunset kiss. We then had lots of fun with a bouquet throw, some photos of the couple with their friends and finally their First Dance finished off our day with this lovely couple, a beautiful venue and a very happy atmosphere.

One thing that really stood out for me how close Natalie & Rob are to to all their friends – and they all certainly know how to party!!!

Prested Hall is discreetly hidden down a long drive in 75 acres of parkland, just off the A12 between Chelmsford and Colchester. There’s something truly romantic about this part-moated 15th century manor house and its mature trees, tranquil setting, and bridge leading over the moat into the fields beyond. The little gazebo at the end of the bridge offers the perfect backdrop for memorable wedding photos. The reception areas include The Oak Room (an 18th century room with a magnificent fire place and stained glass windows), The Garden Room (a 1930s’ former ballroom), the elegant large Orangery overlooking the moat which is ideal for photo’s.  Prested Hall is known for its caring staff, great food (Essex Food & Drinks’ Award 2010 Winner) and relaxed atmosphere.

Wedding Day Preparations

On Wednesday 25th May 2011 I had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of a very special couple Jo and Nick. When I first met them both at the venue to discuss their wedding requirements I instantly warmed to them and could tell this was going to be a really wonderful occasion. The couple had been together for over 20 years and finally decided it was time to to tie the knot and marry in a intimate ceremony with close family and friends.

When the wedding day arrived the sun was shining and I met Jo in her lovely bridal suite who was getting ready with her Mum and Bridesmaids. She seemed relaxed and calm and looking forward to her special day ahead. I begun photographing all of the details and absolutely LOVED her dress it was beautiful and all of the little details matched perfectly. I thought our Bride looked so beautiful a true classical bride and I was really pleased with the final look of her formal bridal portraits, they had an old-fashioned, but ‘timeless’ appeal to them, a style I LOVE and always enjoy photographing. The dark wooden beams in the  bridal suite and quaint furniture all added to the appeal.

I next met with Nick who was excited and a little nervous, but once we got going with some fun images of him and all the guys, everyone relaxed and it was not long before guests started to arrive and gather in the beautiful gardens.

The Wedding Ceremony

The ceremony itself was, well….just perfect. Two lovely people, There closest family and friends, The most beautiful vows and a much anticipated (did I say they had been together over 20 years) announcement that they were now Husband and Wife!… Finally!  There was an almighty round of applause and the the room was filled with so much joy, love and happiness.

The Wedding Reception

After the service the couple spent some time mingling with their guests, there was lots of laughter and also a few tears… but happy ones of course and then I whisked them away for some alone time to get to work capturing some beautiful, romantic images and some memories that will last a life-time.  The setting was perfect, the gardens and lake are gorgeous, everything was so vibrant and colourful, making for some really Serene ‘landscape’ images featuring our beautiful bride and groom.

After the formal group photographs and a mock-cake cutting it was time for me to leave the Bride and Groom and let them really relax and enjoy the rest of their day. I have to say it was one of the loveliest weddings I have had the pleasure to photograph.

I am so pleased for Nick and Jo and wish them both a life-time of love and happiness together.

Down Hall Hotel – Hatfield Heath, Hertfordshire

Down Hall Hotel is one of England’s most established country house hotels. Located in Hatfield Heath, near Bishop’s Stortford on the Hertfordshire and Essex border. The Fennes Essex

The 28th April saw me back at The Fennes Estate to photograph the wedding of Natalie and Colin. I was amazed at how much the venue had changed in only two weeks with the daffodils coming to an end and beautiful new colours covering the gardens as early signs of summer began to show. As I arrived the mid morning sun was shining and it looked set to be a great day.

Wedding Day Preparations

Natalie’s preparations were well underway and she was relaxed and calm and looking forward to her special day ahead. It was a double celebration for our Bride as she was celebrating her birthday also. The Fennes wedding coordinator was busy adding extra special touches to the venue, giving a lovely personal touch for our Bride and Groom, including Royal Wedding inspired bunting and lots of fabulous photographs on the happy couple. The wedding flowers arrived and were just B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. I could not stop photographing them as they just looked so pretty and delicately put together.

The couple’s angelic daughter Jessica wore a dusky pink dress, which matched the colour scheme perfectly; Jessica had just turned one and was taking everything in her tiny stride (or crawl). The other little bridesmaids were beaming from ear to ear and were clearly so very excited at getting dressed up for the day; happily posing for photo after photo.

The Wedding Ceremony

I had a few moments with the Groom Colin and his Groomsmen for some contemporary shots before the couples guests started arriving and it was time for everyone to take their seats in readiness for the brides arrival.

Natalie looked stunning as she walked down the aisle on the arm of her very proud father. As our bride & groom stood at the top of the wedding aisle they looked perfect together, both smiling away throughout their ceremony and exchanging of wedding vows. The room filled with emotion as the couple exchanged a kiss and became Husband and Wife.

The Wedding Reception

Following the ceremony we spent some time in the gardens capturing some lovely romantic shots of them both and with their family and friends. Drinks were flowing and everybody was enjoying the grounds in beautiful sunshine. One of my fondest memories has to be the uproar as the bride and groom entered the wedding breakfast as the New Mr & Mrs Brown wearing Prince William and Kate masks; after all it was the day before the Royal Wedding.

I thoroughly enjoyed photographing the wedding of this lovely couple who made me feel very welcome and relaxed and I have to say I think The Fennes is becoming one of my favourite venues to photograph with so many wonderful features and a fantastic team of staff who work so hard to make sure each wedding is unique, special and ensure the day runs perfectly.. just as it should.

I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as I enjoyed capturing them and I would like to wish Natalie, Colin and Jessica much love, laughter and happiness in their future together.

Friern Manor Country House Hotel

Friern Manor Country House Hotel dates back to circa 1790.  In the late 1980′s Friern Manor was transformed into one of the country’s foremost exclusive hotels and was amongst the first properties in England and Wales to benefit from the change in the Marriages Act 1995.  Each year the venue plays host to both small, intimate weddings and larger society gatherings. Offering three wedding venues: The Dunton Room, The Old Coaching stables & The South Lawn Conservatory.

A Wedding Fit For A King & Queen

Louise & Paul shared their special day with the Royal Wedding of Prince William & Kate Middleton on the 29th April 2011.  When I arrived at Friern Manor our bride was getting ready in one of the venues main suites with her bridesmaids. The television was on and the bridal party watched the Royal Ceremony unfold as they sipped champagne, had their hair styled and make-up applied.  There was a real sense of excitement; and as the Prince and his bride said their vows; our very own beautiful bride was just stepping into her wedding gown that was fit for a queen.

As the Royal proceedings finished I left Louise to head for the ceremony which was being held at St Mary Magdalene Church, a beautiful church in Billericay, Essex.  Here I met Paul and his Grooms Party for a few pre wedding photos before the couples guests arrived and were seated ready for the ceremony. Soon after our Bridal Party made their entrance in style, travelling  in vintage Rolls Royce Wedding Cars.   Louise spent a breif few moments with her dad before he walked her down the aisle to give her away to Paul in an intimate ceremony. Afterwards the couple headed back to Friern Manor to greet their guests for reception drinks on the lawns outside the venues South Lawn Conservatory, the sun was beaming despite the forecast of rain and drinks were flowing.   Before the wedding breakfast the couple received their guests into the beautifully prepared conservatory and when the couple made their entrance as the new Mr & Mrs there was an almighty cheer and laughter rippled throughout the venue as the couple marched through wearing William and Kate masks!

It truly was a perfect day and who knows in 50 years time Louise & Paul may be sharing drinks on the lawns of Buckingham Palace to celebrate their shared 50th Wedding Anniversary with Prince William and Kate!

The Fennes, Bocking – Essex

The Fennes is a beautiful Manor House situated in 100 acres of tranquil Essex countryside; some parts of the house date back to the 15th Century, however, the majority of the beautiful reception rooms are Georgian with high ceilings and a very spacious feel. I have had the pleasure of photographing weddings at the venue before and find it full of fantastic photo opportunities.

The wedding of Kim & Daniel in this stunning venue provided the setting of More Than Words Photography’s second wedding of 2011.

The Wedding Day unfolds…

I arrived at the venue nice and early and had time to take a good look around and photograph some of the venues fine features before Kim arrived with her parents. She prepared for her special day with her mum in one of the venues master suites and the atmosphere was relaxed and calm as mother and daughter shared a very special morning together adding finishing touches to their wonderful outfits and Kim’s stunning wedding dress. Soon after Daniel arrived with his Grooms party, all in high spirits and we  soon got started with some contemporary photographs of all the guys together.  Guests started to arrive and it was not long before Kim and Daniel were exchanging their wedding vows. Kim’s Mum gave an emotional but beautiful reading during the ceremony and they were soon pronounced husband and wife. The rest of the day went so smoothly, the sun came out to shine and I had a lot of fun with the couple capturing some lovely romantic images in the beautiful grounds and I was especially pleased with a beautiful bridal portrait lit by window light.

Here are some of the photos from Kim & Daniels wonderful wedding which followed a London Wasps – rugby inspired theme of blacks and yellows.  A great choice for this fun-loving couple.

Wedding Season Has Begun!

What a way to kick off the wedding photography season; a beautiful venue with an even more beautiful & fun loving couple. Dominique & James – a truly special couple.

Spains Hall, Finchingfield – Essex.

Spains Hall Estate is just outside the beautiful village of Finchingfield in Essex; a village that has been in the best part untouched from the 17th Century and could be mistaken for a period drama film set.   Spains Hall’s modern stable-conversion has to be one of the best mixes of traditional and contemporary venues I’ve had the pleasure of photographing.  A truly romantic, elegant wedding venue with stunning gardens,  beautiful quaint & picturesque cottages that are authentically vintage.  As a wedding photographer I was spoilt by a veritable feast of photo opportunities, the cottages, the grounds, the two wedding venues both the stables and the main house – beautiful – absolutely stunning.

The Bride & Groom

Dominique wore a fabulous Ian Stuart Vienna wedding dress – Ian  Stuart is fast becoming my favourite designer his dresses make for fabulous photos! and her ‘irregular choice’ wedding shoes are the funkiest I’ve ever seen. The brides party all got ready in the historical cottage on the edge of the estate. When I arrived the champagne was open, hair was being styled and everyone was in high spirits.  A fantastic start to the day.

James and his groomsmen, mum & dad were also getting ready on-site in another of the Estates Cottages and again everyone excited to be sharing the couples magical day.

I wish Dominique & James a long and happy marriage – you are both wonderful people and it was an honour for us to share your special day.

When I received the call only Wednesday to see if I would be interested in exhibiting I was hesitant at first, I was not at all geared up for exhibitions and did not want to look unprofessional amongst the more experienced Wedding Suppliers, but then I realised that there is nothing like a challenge to get you motivated so I took the plunge and said yes…. and then went into ‘Apprentice’ mode and proceeded to get everything organised. Lord Alan Sugar would be proud! LOL.

Seriously though I really am overwhelmed with the generosity help and support I have received from friends, colleagues and local businesses who have all contributed and pulled out all the stops for me… You guys know who you are and are all great.. thank you so much.  Biggest thanks has to go to my good friend and colleague Harry Pettet who did an amazing job designing my new leaflets and banner stand. At 8pm Thursday night we had not even started by 3am Friday morning we finished the design, by 8am Friday I was on the phone to various print suppliers and  by 10am driving all over town delivering the artwork for printing and now at 6pm Friday I’m sitting here with 300 x 6 sided leaflets and an awesome looking 2 meter tall banner stand.. its the nuts! I will post a photo from the exhibition on Sunday to my facebook page or better still come and say hi and take a look for yourself, it would be great to see you there.

I have a good feeling about this, I already have 4 potential clients that are coming to see me and I am really looking forward to exhibiting at my first wedding fayre and seeing what impact this may have for my business.
